How Chalk Times Became My Go-To Authentic Display Font

I was staring at a brand board that felt too polished, too corporate. The client was a new craft brewery, and the initial logo drafts using a sleek sans-serif just weren’t landing. They wanted something that felt approachable, community-focused, and a little nostalgic. I needed texture, a touch of humanity. I opened my font manager, scrolled past the usual suspects, and landed on a recent download: Chalk Times.

The First Impression: A Font with Character

Chalk Times is, as the name suggests, a lettered display font designed to look like it was just written on a chalkboard. Its beauty lies in its casual simplicity. The letterforms are slightly uneven, the strokes have a natural weight variation, and there’s a subtle texture baked into each character. It doesn’t scream “chalk!” with over-the-top drips and splatters; instead, it whispers it with an authentic, hand-drawn feel. The mood is personal, friendly, and real. It’s the kind of typeface that immediately makes a design feel less like a sterile corporate asset and more like a conversation.

I dragged it onto the logo draft, replacing the stark sans-serif with “Hops & Hands Brewing.” Instantly, the mood shifted. The name looked like it could be on a chalkboard menu behind the bar, or hand-lettered on a sign above the door. The client’s reaction was the confirmation I needed: “That’s it. That feels like us.”

Building a Brand System with a Display Font

Using a display font like Chalk Times as a primary logo typeface requires some strategic thinking. Its strength is in its distinct personality, but you can’t use it for everything. For the brewery project, Chalk Times became the brand’s signature voice. We used it for the primary logo, all headline text on packaging, and prominent signage.

On the can labels, “Hops & Hands” in Chalk Times sat proudly at the top, instantly recognizable. For the flavor descriptors—like “Citrus IPA” or “Oak-Aged Stout”—we paired it with a clean, neutral sans-serif. This created a perfect visual hierarchy: the friendly, distinctive brand name captured attention, and the supporting sans-serif provided clear, readable information. The pairing made the design feel cohesive but not monotonous.

This approach extended to every touchpoint. The chalkboard texture of the font translated beautifully to physical materials. For the interior shop sign, we mocked it up on a dark background, and it looked like it was actually painted on the wall. Business cards used the logo in Chalk Times with the sans-serif for contact details. The contrast was professional yet inviting.

From Packaging to Digital: Consistent Personality

A great brand identity works across mediums. The true test for Chalk Times was moving from print to digital. In social media graphics, especially for Instagram, the font performed wonderfully. In the brewery’s homepage hero section, a large headline written in Chalk Times set a warm, welcoming tone. It broke the coldness of a typical website header. For event posters and flyers, it gave the promotional material an artisan, handmade vibe that resonated with the local audience.

It’s important to note that Chalk Times is a display font, meaning it’s best used for short, impactful text—headlines, logos, labels, call-out quotes. We never used it for body copy, website paragraphs, or lengthy descriptions. That would compromise readability. Its role was always to inject personality at key moments, to be the memorable accent that ties the brand together.

Practical Observations from Real Mockups

Testing a font in context is crucial. Before finalizing the brewery’s assets, I placed Chalk Times in dozens of mockup scenarios:

Each test confirmed its versatility for this specific brand’s aesthetic. The font’s built-in texture meant it didn’t require extra design work to look “real.” It delivered that personal feel straight out of the box.

Why Chalk Times Works for Authentic Brands

Beyond this brewery project, I’ve found Chalk Times to be a incredibly useful tool for a range of clients seeking an authentic identity. It’s perfect for:

The font affects brand perception directly. It conveys honesty, approachability, and a human touch. In a market saturated with ultra-minimalist brands, this can be a powerful differentiator. It encourages audience engagement because it feels less like advertising and more like a personal note.

Advice for Testing and Implementation

If you’re considering Chalk Times for a project, start by using it only for your primary brand name or main headline. See how it feels. Always pair it with a more readable font for any supporting text—a simple sans-serif or a classic serif often works best. This pairing ensures consistency and professionalism without sacrificing the unique mood Chalk Times provides.

Check the font files for the glyphs you need. For most Latin-based projects, it has full support. Its casual style means it often doesn’t include extensive alternates or ligatures, which keeps it simple to use. Remember its purpose: it’s a decorative, personality-driven display typeface. It’s not designed to be the entire system, but rather the charismatic anchor of that system.

For client work, especially commercial branding and packaging, its authentic look can help products stand out on a shelf or a website. In digital templates, use it sparingly for key titles to maintain impact. Overuse on a single page can dilute its charm.

In the end, my experience with Chalk Times on that brewery project cemented it as a reliable font in my toolkit for when a brand needs a heartbeat. It’s more than just a chalkboard font; it’s a shortcut to authenticity, a way to make a design feel like it has a story before you’ve even written one.
